It’s impawtant to stay alert on a sailboat.

Furiends a couple of nights ago there was a bit of an emergency on my pontoon. After dinner we heard shouting outside. To begin with we weren’t sure what it was. We pulled our hatch open and all popped our heads outside to see what was going on. We heard someone in distress calling out “aiuto aiuto” (“help help”) repeatedly. We couldn’t see anyone so all three of us sprang into action and quickly hopped off the bow of Nocturne onto the pontoon. Over the edge of the pontoon on the opposite side, a man was stuck in the water.

He’d taken a tumble as he was getting off his boat and badly injured himself and couldn’t get back aboard. He was only using one arm, but luckily we could see he could swim so none of us had to jump in to keep him afloat. He’d swam quite far up the pontoon to get our attention so we walked down with him as he slowly made his way back. We lowered his swim ladder for him so he could climb back onto his boat and helped him get dried off. He’d obviously badly hurt his shoulder so we offered to take him to hospital but it turns out our neighbour is a doctor and knew what to do so he declined. It’s very lucky that he didn’t hit his head otherwise the situation would have been much worse.

Once I realised he was OK I took off running to the end of the pontoon, where it’s shaped like a T, because I love hanging over the edge watching the fish and the ripples below. Once the humans were happy that the man was OK they came after me and demanded we all go home again. We later heard that he has in fact broken his shoulder and wanted to thank us for helping him.

I love our community. Sailors always look out for each other. It’s very impawtant to stay alert and I’m so happy that the situation wasn’t worse.

On the edge!

Bisous, Bailey

  2. this is why i wear my PFD when at the boat alone. even in a marina you are really ‘alone’ unless someone is standing near you and helping with a project. if you fall off the dock, or the boat when she is at the dock, you need that PFD. as you wrote if he had hit his head going over he would have had no options. glad to read this specific situation ended in a positive way.

  3. WOW Bailey – I think that qualifies as a “rescue at sea” for you and your Mom and Dad! Glad the man is alright…………and so happy you all were there to help him!

    Hugs, Sammy

  5. Bailey, that is pawsome that you and your humans heard the distress call and rushed to action! Brave man with a broken shoulder swimming to save himself, but I’m sure you all gave him the extra encouragement and hope to get to his destination safely! Well done, Nocturne Crew! Pat
