I’m in BIG trouble!

I’m sure I can count on you my dearest furiends to understand… I have a problem. When I see the corner of the sofa I’m compelled to scratch it. Even though I have a pawesome cat tree, I just can’t help myself, when I see the sofa it just invites me to scratch it. My cat tree is still pristine, I love sitting on it but I would never scratch it, it’s far to precious! My humans have tried everything to stop me attacking the sofa. They put a cover over it but that only slowed me down for about a millisecond. They put treats and cat-nip on my cat tree and encouraged me to use it. They squirted me with water ever time they caught me red-pawed. They even shouted and clapped their hands like crazy little seals when they thought I was about to pounce on the sofa. Then they got some irritating double sided tape designed to stop me, which I must admit, was a pain but I struggled on and wasn’t defeated. I couldn’t help it I… Well…

I now realise the error of my ways and I’m very sorry, but I think it’s too late for the sofa and the deposit on the flat… It will need to have a completely new cover. Whoopsie! My humans aren’t mad at me, just disappointed. I think that’s even worse. I’ve promised not to scratch anything on the boat… I love her far too much and I’m sure I’ll be too busy doing other fun things to even consider scratching the sofa.

Have you ever been in trouble for ruining furniture or for breaking something?

Bisous Bailey

  4. Ooooooh……Bailey. You are one lucky boy if your pawrents aren’t mad about that!!! I’m declawed, so i haven’t damaged anything, but claws are the reason my “stepsister”, Gypsy, is a shop kitty. Motor Mommy says she’d destroy everything in our house in no time flat!

  5. My goodness – how awful of your human to make such a fuss about something so natural. If I were you, I’d show no remorse at all – serves them right for leaving you alone so often and so long sometimes. After all – they are just your staff. And declawing is forbidden in my country – for a reason! Claws are the only defenses a cat has – what next to deprive it of – its teeth so it cannot bite you anymore? A cat is a cat – sue it.

I couldn’t agree more- on the declawing part that is. It is torture and a form of amputation, it is sad how many abandoned cats are found this way. This makes it harder to finding someone to adopt them at times too.
My mancat Kaspars agrees that it is not your fault Bailey that you are attracted to clawing the couch, there is obviously a force stronger than any cat that is at work here. How are you to stop a magical force?!

  6. well, I never scratched anything or broke anything but there is a first time for everything! Tell your Mom to also try aluminum foil in the future, that works well too.

  7. Uhoh Bailey…..well I had the same problem when I was a little guy BUT the double-sided tape worked on me – I quit clawing the sofa (never did it to anything BUT the sofa for some reason!!). Now that I’m older I’m not necessarily wiser (!) and I’m starting to return to that “unacceptable” behavior! I’m in trouble too!!

  8. oh bailey! i’m glad i’m not alone in destroying things that the humans care about! Way back when we moved into our apartment, and I was left alone for the first time, i got so nervous that i scratched the paint off the front door and dug up the carpet next to the door. All I wanted to do was go out to find my parents….i mean jeez, i just wanted OUT! i wasn’t trying to hurt anything! My parents subsequently learned that I suffer from “Separation Anxiety,” so they realized it wasn’t REALLY my fault…. Maybe you could try something like that on your humans. ;-} Love, Zoey-the-sailor-dog (on ChaliVentures)

  9. Dear brofur…we so feel your pain! Only two of us have ever broken any really, really expensive stuff, and those two are now angels. We assure you, they died of natural causes, and it was not at the hands of the humans. We do so like to get our claws into a good piece of upholstery, even though, we also use our cat tree and scratchers. A kitty totally destroyed my mom’s most pawsome leather chair. We have never and never will confess to that one. Since you have promised not to scratch anything on your precious Nocturne, we think you and your humans should chalk this up in the experience column and move on. It’s just an inanimate object! And what’s a few green papers lost from your deposit. LOVE, PURRS AND PAW-PATS from your brofur and sisfurs, LILY OLIVIA, MAURICIO, MISTY MAY, GIULIETTA, FIONA, ASTRID, LISBETH AND CALISTA JO

  10. Hi Bailey, Ku’s Mama here. Tell your mum that squirting orange or rubbing orange or lemon peel on places you shouldn’t scratch might help.

  13. Oh man… you sure did leave your mark on that sofa, Bailey! We understand though. We have done the same thing to one of the corners of our mom and dad’s sofa. It’s a tough thing to resist, even if we do have scratching posts. At least you have promised to not scratch anything on the boat!

  14. I have to be honest, Bailey – that couch just looks like it has the perfect scratchable material! It’s the same thing here with the dining room chairs – the fabric is nice and nubby and Binga has torn one seat to bits! It is the same one that sits in the afternoon sun puddle. I think this is no coincidence – she was marking it as hers! We do not scratch the sofa here, incidentally – it is microfiber, which is not a fun scratching surface. We prefer the cardboard scratchers and loungers up here – you can tell THEY are well loved!

  16. It happens. The Siamese who are living in kitty heaven made short work of a sofa. Took about three years to shred one corner. Another tear just meant another layer of duct tape. 🙂

  17. Bailey! You and Teddy share a love of keeping your cat trees perfect! Mr. Bear tried this on my leopard couch and when I put double sided tape on it, he left it alone. However, he loves clawing up the carpet in my apartment, which means I will also lose my deposit. But you little fur babies are worth it!

  18. He he he 🙂 I know this very well, all our sofas and armchairs like that!!!!! My Princess as you, did and did… But now I found a very simple solution, I cover all them with curtain tulle! She doesn’t like tulle and can’t do it… Try, and also it really gives a nice decoration to our damaged sofa or armchair 🙂 Thank you, Love, nia

Dear Bailey I’m sure you just do this out of Boredom. What about some nail caps. They even come in solors. That way you can still go through the motins but not tear anything. Also if your humans use a carpet runner over the furniture corner. It normally protects carpets from dirt. It has annoying bumps on one side to grip the carpet. If that side is faced outward from the sofa it will feel awful to touch with your paws and that will help you stop. This can be used for counter tops too.

  26. Bailey, have you ever tried a sisal-covered scratching post. This is most pawsome . My fun-loving Teaky (she a Maine Coon so believes in all fun all the time) like it better most of the time. I hope there is room for such a thing on the boat and that you can try it.
