Getting rid of diesel bug

As you know we had an unfortunate incident with diesel bug when the engine stopped as we were leaving Corfu.

We made it back to Gouvia marina and looked into sorting out our problem. We researched a method called diesel fuel polishing where the fuel is pumped out and through a machine where its cleaned and then pumped straight back into the tank in a cycle. We thought this would be the best option, but after more research we realised that the best way is to completely empty the tanks to be able to clean them properly. Since we were supposed to be crossing from Greece back to Italy we were watching our weather window and we didn’t have enough jerrycans to hold all our our fuel, (the tanks were full ready for our crossing) we decided to employ a company to come and do the job to make it faster.

I enjoyed having the guys aboard and inspecting all of their equipment.

Snifffing the equipment

The diesel bug looked like some sort of scary black ghost in my tanks… I couldn’t wait to get it out.

The tanks were drained and cleaned.

Dirty tanks

That should have been the happy ending to the story but unfortunately there was more drama yet to come!

  2. After they ‘cleaned’ the fuel, did they add chemicals to kill any bugs that might remain?

  3. Oh golly, Now we have t wait and see what else happened! The bugs that got in the jet fuel back at DaNang made strands that looked like spaghetti! It was pretty scary too. Especially when you think that the F-4 Phantoms don’t have a dinghy to help them when the engine stops.
