Horrified by dog tags!

Well furiends I’m in need or your support and sympathy today. The humans came back yesterday with dog tags for me! I’m horrified! I do NOT want to wear them! There’s a small one to go on a collar… Yes… A COLLAR! I’ve also got a bigger one to go on my harness (when I’m told I can take off the collar) if I’m out on the lead.

They look OK I suppose but I really don’t want to wear a collar! The humans are worried that I will run off and get lost so on the back of the tags is our phone number. Of course if I’m in the marina most people already know me anyway but it has my boat’s name Nocturne too. Purrsonally I think my microchip is more than sufficient.

There’s a few problems with this for me…
*Firstly, of course I won’t get lost! In principle I won’t be allowed outside anyway, only under supervision, but in the past I’ve made it quite clear that it’s my life’s ambition to out smart the humans and get outside, so they are nervous about me getting into trouble.
*Secondly, on the few occasions that I have escaped it was only so I could take a stroll and I’ve come straight back (well I’m not going to tell all my secrets) to Nocturne. On one occasion I managed to get out overnight and the humans woke up to hear me scratching to get back in! (Yes they really are silly!)

They are worried that in the summer when it gets baking hot and they will be forced to keep an airflow going through the boat, keeping me in is going to be really difficult. They are asking everyone they know on ideas to keep me contained in the boat. The problem, they say, is that not everyone would welcome me popping on board to say hi and if I snuggled in without them knowing, perhaps I’d be sailing off unexpectedly on another boat. Purr-lease! I’m not that stupid!

They’ve promised that when we’re out sailing I won’t have to wear the collar because I’ll be very safe so I suggest we just go sailing full time already!

I’ve had a good scratch trying to get it off because that worked the last time the humans tried to get me to wear a collar, but this time they said it’s for my own good and I will get used to it.

So I’m sulking in the sock box now instead!

What do you guys think? Humans can be so unreasonable can’t they! I’d like to see how they’d like it if I made them wear a dog tag!

Now Bailey, it was your dream to live on the boat and sail full time so unfortunately you have to do as your mum says, she does know what is best for you and anyway, the collar looks very smart on you.

  6. Well brofur, we all wear collars and always have with a tag with all the impawtant info (even those of us with microchips). We think it is purrfectly reasonable, and you will get used to it in now time. And it gets you home much more quickly than a microchip. Mommy saw something on Glorgirly’s blog yesterday or maybe the day before about a collar that measures activity as well as has a GPS tracking device in it. You might want your humans to check that out (even though it requires wearing a collar). At least the one you have goes beautifully with your bright blue eyes. 7. WOW Bailey. I’m like you. I don’t care too much for collars. Mommy learned that early in my life. But your situation is a little different. Think of it as a good thing. Hear me out. If by chance, somehow you do get astray, people can bring you back to your humans. I mean what would they do without YOU? XOXO – Bacon

  8. A medallion, as suggested, would be a good way to think of your tags. But, it is very wise precaution by your humans.

  10. Well Bailey we wear them too. Mom feels safer because some peeps don’t know/care about microchips so she feels it is double safe to have collars on us too. So we understand and wear them to make her happy.

  11. Can your humans put something similar to fly screens on the open hatches? They’ll let air through and keep you contained.

    • Well we have mosquito nets for the summer time but I can take them out with a claw in less than a minute! Hehe! They are looking at metal wiring as an alternative but dad says he doesn’t want the boat to look like a prison just because of me!

  12. Bailey I hear what you are saying. My mum makes me wear a collar and name tag because I like to jump the fence into our next door neighbour’s house and she is worried that I will get lost. She also says it is because I am all black and some people don’t like black cats. I assured her that I am fine when I am securing my territory, but she still isn’t convinced. But my sister doesn’t wear one because she never leaves the house. It is so unfair!!!
When will our parents trust as and relax?

    • Thank you John. It was mum… dad’s much more relaxed about the whole thing telling her it will be her chasing after me anyway! It’s going to be interesting! I’m sure once the novelty has worn off as long as they let me out on the lead regularly I will calm down!

  14. A useful bit of extra insurance, even if completely unnecessary. If caravan cats can be free to come and go in each new environment and (a) always come back and (b) not go off in another caravan, why can’t a boat cat?

    • I hope they will chill out and relax on the rules a bit. They are just worried that if I go to sleep on someone elses boat I could end up sailing off without them. There’s lots of strays at the marina entrance too that wait for the fisherman and sometimes we hear some nasty sounding fights. Most of them only have one eye or ear. Mum doesn’t want me getting mixed up in it. I think I’d make an excellent judge though!

  15. What a bummer Bailey! I agree, you are really too smart to need the stupid tags, but you might as well humor your humans, otherwise they will get weird and neurotic. I’ve seen it happen when my human does not know where I went to and thinks I got out! (Which, BTW, I’ve never done when she’s thought I have.)

I think the tag looks smart on you Bailey, but maybe your humans will get you a different one that you prefer? My little girl cat hated her first tag, but she doesn’t mind her new one. It has a little heart on the front, and she thinks that if she has to wear one, it may as well look like a pretty necklace!

    • Hehe Sparkle! I’ve watched my mum panic for hours on occasions when she can’t find me on the boat and she was sure I couldn’t get out. There’s a great cubby hole that they can’t see! Unfortunately now if they can’t find me they tend to shove one of their paws in to check if I’m in there though.

You are so famous now they don’t want anyone stealing you. Do be carefu;l though I once got my dog tags stuck between 2 boards when resting my head. The tag slipped through the crack in the boards and I was stuck until Momma jean came to my rescue. They make screened in outdoor cat tubes for cats who want to be outside but be protected from other creatures. I will see if I can find it and I will let you know if I find the site address.

    • Thank you so much Mitzi! Such a pawesome idea! This could be good for when dad’s in and out a lot during the day doing projects! My collar has an elasticated bit on it so hopefully if i ever do get stuck I can pull it off.

I did a search for cat tunnels. This could fit on the deck for you when you are not sailing.

  19. I think the humans are right Bailey. Plus, they are just concerned for your safety.

I once had my van parked outside with the windows open. My family and I took a long drive for over an hour to visit family in another town. About ten minutes after we got there I went outside to get something out of the van and I saw a cat jump out the window. I can only hope it was a local cat that jumped into the van and then out again, because the alternative means that we drove a cat miles away from his home.

The same thing might happen to you if you climb on the wrong boat and nobody sees you.

    • Gosh! That’s a scary story! I hope it was a local cat too. One of my humans old cats went to work with her once because she didn’t see her curled up in the back seat until she stopped! I’m not so silly though but I understand why they might worry!

  20. Bailey, why don’t you ask your humans to wear tags too? My humans do so that if something bad happens to them, other people will know who to tell and someone will come feed me. And I’m happy to wear my tags. It means my humans love me!!

    • That’s a great idea Paz! In the marina everybody knows us. (We stick out on an Irish boat in Rome!) But maybe when we’re out sailing and anchoring off I should make them wear something too!

I’m afraid your humans know best on this issue Bailey. I know you are smart and won’t try to run off purposely, but this is to help protect you. Your humans are doing it out of love and because they could not live if you went missing. Not all humans are as kind as yours and even the smartest kitty can become victim to one who does not have your best interest at heart.
What they bought you may look like a dog tag, but it is cat size- one especially for cats. Ms. Phoebe had a microchip too, but also wore a collar and tag just in case. You know being an experienced sailor that the first rule of sailing is: safety first, and part of your upcoming full time life as a sailor means doing this. Your sailing medallion/tag is just part of your sailor uniform, and you look smashing wearing it!

    • Haha! Yes thanks for that Basil! I already have a lead and I’m not too bothered by that because it means I’m outside. The tag is more for if I wander off on my own I guess. My furiends are very slow but I’m hoping to do another post on your food either on Sunday or Monday with them and what they think!

  23. Bailey I hear you and I feel your pain……! Wearing a collar is icky BUT you probably should get used to it because I have to admit, your parents know best. When you’re in port and visiting other boats, this way everyone will know WHO you are and WHERE you belong. When you’re out at sea – you don’t have to wear it – the best of both worlds!

    Hugs, Sammy
