Costa Concordia

Yesterday we set sail from Elba and headed for Isola del Giglio.

Many of you will have heard of this little island because of the Costa Concordia disaster which happened here in January 2012. The cruise ship was carrying over 4000 people when, after hitting a reef, she ran aground resulting in the loss of 32 lives. There’s still lots of media interest in the Costa Concordia due to the ongoing charges against the ship’s captain and the salvage project to refloat the ship, which is due to take place in September 2013.

The humans and I sailed past and to be honest it was a bit eerie. You can see her here in the background…

It’s a very sad sight.

But such a beautiful island!

Today it has been really really hot so I’ve spent most of the day in the shade under the kayak. I’m just waking up now to explore and have fun in the cooler evening breeze.

  2. Stay cool, Bailey, and don’t get dehydrated. Two people from our town lost their lives on that ship and; even though, Mom has seen it on the news bunches, it gave her chills to look at the photos. have a super great day. 3. We can send people to the moon but can’t get a ship out of the ocean. What a sad memory.

  4. Too bad your view has to be ruined with the wreck of the ship – hopefully soon they will haul it out of there. In the meantime, it is a beautiful island and I’m so happy you’re enjoying all the pretty weather and sailing on the sea.

  11. You get to see the most interesting things! Wrecks often mean lives were lost, but they are fascinating nevertheless.
